SOME SUCCESSFUL SMART EXPERIENCES AROUND THE WORLD

SMART CITIES IN SWITZERLAND TRUST PARADOX ENGINEERING

Swiss municipality in Ticino canton, Chiasso counts about 8.500 inhabitants and was awarded with the «Energy City» label for its forward-looking energy efficiency policies. Together with AGE SA, the local utility managing water, electricity, gas distribution in the area, Chiasso is always looking for new ways to achieve higher green targets. The City started to invest on its street lighting infrastructure and implemented PE.AMI as advanced system for remote monitoring and control of street lamps. “Investments we are shouldering to improve street lighting are paying relevant benefits back to Chiasso citizens and businesses, as well as to local government and AGE itself”, confirmed Corrado Noseda, director at AGE SA. “Thanks to LED transition and the possibility to calibrate each light point from remote, we estimate a 70% cut of daily energy consumption […]. Management and maintenance costs have been reduced too”. Discussions are nowadays in place to extend PE.AMI network to a smart parking project and test some pioneer drone applications in the same area.

A similar Smart City transformation is in progress in Bellinzona, capital of Ticino canton with more than 18.000 inhabitants. The smart evolution started from its public lighting infrastructure: about 600 mercury vapor lamps have been replaced with LED-based devices so far, and 900 more will be substituted by the end of 2016. Having implemented PE.AMI as remote management and control platform, local utility AMB managed to better calibrate lighting intensity and reduce it by 50% in selected streets. The project also involves a Smart Metering pilot initiative, using the same PE.AMI platform to control a portion of the power distribution network and a set of electrical meters, and an ambitious FTTH – Fiber To The Home plan, aiming at bringing optical fiber to all homes in Bellinzona and surroundings.

KAMBODIA USES PE.AMI TO COVER SEVERAL LOCATIONS WITH SMART SOLUTIONS

In the Kingdom of Cambodia, demand for construction and improvement of infrastructures has been showing a marked increase due to the rapid economic growth, while the price of electricity is among the highest in ASEAN. Public lighting was identified as one of the key infrastructures to be optimized, and MinebeaMitsumi committed to a high-efficiency LED Street Lighting project in close collaboration with Paradox Engineering and Iwasaki Electric. By 2017, about 9 thousand street lights will be replaced with LED luminaires and connected to a wireless network based on PE.AMI. The infrastructure will cover four different locations: Boeng Kak Lake area and Japan Kizuna Bridge area in Phnom Penh City, Siem Reap City and Angkor Wat ruins area. According to the feasibility study, this project would reduce CO2 emissions of 3,590 tCO2/year and strongly tear down energy consumption. Other smart services will be gradually integrated.

PILOT PROJECT FOR SMART CITY IN DENMARK

Paradox Engineering works together with Danish regional energy and fiber broadband provider EnergiMidt to develop a smart city pilot project in Almind, community of Viborg, Denmark. Smart lighting and smart parking networks will be available to public and private business customers in Denmark. The pilot will make use of 50 light poles supplied with smart lamps and PE.AMI lighting management nodes which will connect each light point to a wireless network and feature a motion sensor that triggers automatically to dim the light up and down during vehicle transit. The structure will also support smart parking systems to detect vehicles occupying parking bays to provide motorists with real-time information about parking availability. PE.AMI’s central management suite (CMS) is enabling remote monitoring and control. “We are excited to be a part of the global Paradox Engineering Partner Community and to be able to provide Danish cities with the technological tools to improve the lives of millions of Danes. Paradox Engineering solutions are built on open internet standards which ensure our customers both future proof-ness and flexibility. A key feature of the solution is the availability of third party chipsets and development kits which makes it possible for students and entrepreneurs to develop new products and services for the cities and their citizens”, stated Flemming Jensen, Market Development Manager, EnergiMidt.

SMART PARKING IN KOLIN, CZECH REPUBLIC

Czech engineering company SPEL Inc. and Paradox Engineering are collaborating to design and implement next-generation solutions for Smart Mobility and Smart Cities, pooling respective competences and expertise in industrial and urban services automation. First achievement of this cooperation is the innovative Smart Parking project completed in Kolin, Czech Republic. With a population of more than 30.000 people and a notable historical heritage, the town of Kolin aimed at improving urban mobility. SPEL offered the community an integrated Smart Parking solution based on Tinynode’s technology. Tinynode is a Paradox Engineering’s company specializing in wireless vehicle detection systems for parking-related applications. About 60 parking spots in the historical city center have been equipped with Tinynode’s B4-L sensors to detect car occupancy. “Integrating Tinynode’s parking technology, vehicle detection sensors and safe wireless network with an open communication protocol, we enabled a quick and secure architecture to feed the information system of the City”, stated Jiri Svoboda, CEO, SPEL Inc.
