Intelligent Air and Thermal Management

 

Controllable air guides can significantly improve air and heat management in vehicles. MinebeaMitsumi Technology Center Europe GmbH develops and produces smart actuators for active grill shutter flaps adjustment. The intelligent control system finds its application in vehicles with combustion engines as well as in electric vehicles. Active grill shutter adjustment allows the air flow to be controlled in a targeted manner and the aerodynamics of the vehicle to be improved.

During the cold-start phase, the flaps in vehicles with internal combustion engines remain closed, allowing the engine to reach operating temperatures more quickly. This effect alone achieves a significant reduction in emissions. The actuator consists of a gearbox, an electric motor, software and connection electronics. This sophisticated gearbox provides an enormous torque, so that the blades can be controlled without any problems even while driving under the influence of large counterforces. By reducing drag in this way, vehicles consume less fuel, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

Our actuator technology combines a brushless DC drive, intelligent, programmable control electronics and specially developed gearbox variants. The compact design allows optimal adaptation to customer requirements.

Intelligent control is also used in electric vehicles. In electric vehicles, the intelligent control is used to optimize the thermal management of the battery. In view of the limited energy storage possibilities, aerodynamics and the opening or closing of the shutters in the front area also play a decisive role. This enables targeted control of the air flow to cool the batteries and achieves a comfortable operating temperature, thus maintaining or increasing the range. Careful temperature control is of central importance for the performance and service life of the batteries.

For example, more and more electrified vehicles are being equipped with automated fuel tank and charging flap systems. These not only increase convenience when charging the vehicle, but will also enable fully autonomous charging in the future.
